+ River and Lake Depths
The River empties into the Central Basin of Lake Erie which is generally deeper than the Lake's Western Basin but shallower than the Eastern Basin. The maximum depth of the Central Basin is about 75 feet. Near the shore the depth of Lake Erie is in the 15 to 30 foot range. Within the breakwall that guards the shore near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, an entry channel of 28 feet in depth is maintained through dredging. The last 5.8 miles of the River is also dredged to a depth of approximately 26 feet to accommodate lake freighter traffic. The natural depth of this portion of the River is 3 to 6 feet. The lack of a natural harbor necessitated the construction of the breakwall and changes to the lower part of the River to extend the harbor inland.
To assist navigation parts of the river and entry channel in Lake Erie have been deepened through dredging.
